This book is a timely and apt intervention in the theoretic inadequacies – identification and application of theories and acknowledgment of their propounders – students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels face as they write their works. In this book, the essential features/assumptions of a wide range of theories applicable to the studying of the following fields of academic endeavour: Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Government, International Economic Relations, Information Resource Management, Management, Mass Communication, Politics, Public Administration, Religious and Cultural Studies and Social Work, are adequately taken care of by various contributors in these fields. Also, some likely research interests/topics to which these theories may be applied are identified for guide as well as interest stimulation. To the extent possible, these theories are examined as they are understood by the writers, together with some of the criticism by their opponents. In addition, each theory is shown in the context of contemporary sociopolitical, management issues and institutions concomitant to them. The goal is to help readers appreciate their essence, uses and applicability to research problem in social and management sciences.


This book of a unique import and timely relevance is published in this period when postgraduate studies in Babcock University is increasingly heightening the necessity for every student to appropriately and adequately underpin their theses with theories. In fact, there has not been any other time since 1999 when the centrality of theory to research endeavour has been underscored than now. Therefore, to lay theories bare especially with the aim of detailing their tenets/assumptions, logical and empirical applications as well as suggesting some problems to which they can be applied across different fields of study is necessary now. Understanding theories can also help us appreciate ourselves, our social environment and what we believe. Thus the readers will find here much discussion of current debates across the disciplines listed above to illustrate how theories occupy a pride of place in social and management researches.

As would be seen, this Anthology does not provide all theories in social science. However, the bulk of this book consists of specific chapters (altogether twelve) on what we see as the common theoretic appeals to which researches at both undergraduate and postgraduate level respond.


Our effort to avoid repetition of theories could not yield 100 percent result because of the attraction as well as the utility of some of the repeated theories across discipline. We did not direct our energy toward providing case by case preview of each chapter since there is a singular objective of each chapter – providing a number of theories. The contributors also got this contagion by adopting a presentation format that consists of brief introduction that underscores the role and importance of theory; therefore, a hint on theories discussed was followed by at least five theories, their application and tenets, which were presented paragraph after paragraph. Although few of the chapters have not followed this format religiously, all the same they fulfilled the objective of the project – elucidation of theoretical frameworks in vogue in their respective disciplines. However the introductory chapter of this book did not follow this format since its agenda was to give a grand introduction to all chapters. Pooling theoretical frameworks for the entire social and management sciences is a herculean task as we believe that no one single volume can pretend to do that successfully due to the myriad of theories that are contending for attention in social and management sciences. We have assumed, perhaps optimistically, that most researchers and readers will find in this book that they are familiar with and have their knowledge deepened by the clarity with which authors provide details about them.
