Abstract

The paper has the perspective of a Medical Social Worker in a clinical setting. The paper conceptualizes poverty as well as the indices of poverty.  The paper addresses the socio-economic status of the women across the globe as documented by the United Nations and researchers.  Gender dimension of poverty is highlighted.   The author discusses some Women Empowerment programmes in Nigeria and the hindrances to successful implementation.  Vivid examples depicting the faces of poverty on the Nigerian women are given.

The paper discusses Gender Discrimination and the Law while some solutions are proffered to alleviate poverty, especially among women.
