Abstract

The novel Coronavirus popularly known as COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a strain of Coronavirus first discovered in Wuhan, China. Since the early stages of its outbreak, the COVID-19 pandemic has placed pressure on countries all over the world. The social work profession being a helping profession played a major role in alleviating the effect of this virus on the people and the society. This study examined the following: the social work profession, the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of the social worker during the pandemic and the paradigm. The study adopted the secondary research methods of gathering information from sources like online, literature research, case studies and records. The study revealed that during the pandemic, social workers all over the world played major roles in assisting people infected with the virus and their relatives; some of these roles include counselling, advocating, educating, mediator, broker.
