Abstract
Femi Osofisan’s works are usually approached from a Marxist literary ideological standpoint. It is from this perspective that most critical opinions are formed about the nature and meanings of his works. This paper is a deliberate deviation from this approach to attempt a deconstructive reading of his works. In this paper, the features of deconstruction, such as hierarchies, privileged members, binary oppositions and contradictions, are highlighted and applied to the reading of Osofisan’s Once upon Four Robbers. The outcome of this analysis is the exposure of new meanings derivable from the texts which are not static or absolute, and an exposition of the depth of despondency in the African human condition.
