Abstract
This study analyzed the socio-economic determinants of consumer preference for information sources on food safety in Uyo Local Government area of Akwa Ibom State. Six information sources on food safety were considered which include doctors/ experts, tevevision programme, radio program, newspaper/ magazine, neighbours/ friends and the internet. The data for the study were obtained from 100 consumers selected randomly. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logit regression model. The descriptive statistics results showed that on the average, respondents were still in their active age (35 years) with moderate literacy level (14 years). Majority of the respondents (59%) have at least one pregnant woman, infant or both as members of the household. Most of the respondents rated doctors/ experts highest and the internet least on their preference list as sources of food safety information. All the explanatory variables regressed against preference for information sources were found significant for one source or the other except age. The preferences for information sources were mainly influenced by education, level of income and household size. In increasing consumer awareness for food safety, more doctors and health experts should be involved in carrying out educational campaigns and television programmes. Doctors’ consultation fees as relates to food safety education and counseling should be subsidized by the government.
