Abstract
In Nigeria, there abound a wide repertoire of festival events and resources from different lingual and cultural backgrounds. This is enhanced by the fact that Nigeria has both ethnic and lingual diversity and variants. This chapter examines the Magbo Song and Dance Ensemble performance of Epe in Lagos state in particular, through a literary examination of the performance arts such as, the performers, music, dance, stage audience and other performance elements that abound in it. The chapter also investigates the functionality of the performance within the socio-cultural and religious matrix of the Epe people. To achieve the desired goal, Richard Baumann’s Performance Theory, which perceives a performance from the non-literal meaning of the words spoken, is applied through a field investigation which includes the observance and recording of live performances and oral interviews as well as the translation and literary analysis of the song texts. The chapter concludes that beyond the surface meaning of the song texts, there are signs and codes and hidden meanings which ultimately impact on the people so that they perceive the performance not only as an artistic event, but as an avenue for religious expression and societal development.
