Abstract
The research was carried out in Afikposouth L.G.A. of Ebonyi, and it was designed to examine the economics of maize production in the area. A multistage randomised sampling technique was used to select 90 respondents in the study area. Structured questionnaire were used to collect the data on costs and returns of the maize enterprise, socioeconomic characteristics of the farmers, and constraints to increased maize production in the area. The data was analyzed using percentages. Other tools used include costs and returns analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The result obtained shows that maize production in the area is profitable having the net returns of N835,70.00 and BCR of 2.38. It was generally observed that farmers in the study area were constrained by inadequate capital, lack of essential infrastructures/amenities, and inadequate government policies. The government of Ebonyi state should help to eliminate the above constraints in order to encourage the farmers in the area.
