Abstract
ABSTRACT
A literary classic or masterpiece is a work of literature generally recognized as excellent and of lasting value. This paper has explored the literary foundations of excellence in Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe to justify its classification as a literary classic. To achieve this, Longinus’ theory of excellence espoused in his landmark critical book titled The Sublime, is applied using the psychoanalytic and the formalism theoretical approaches to analyze the text. This paper concludes that in Robinson Crusoe, Defoe exhibits a firm grasp of ideas and a powerful artistic and narrative vision, vigorous emotions, a definite style, notable language and a fitting and dignified arrangement. Hence, the work is qualified to be classified a literary classic.
