Abstract The recognition of information literacy as the over-arching literacy in the present IT driven and dynamic knowledge economy has prompted a number of initiatives in higher education. Most of these initiatives call for incorporation of information literacy in the curriculum and review of teaching methodology. Studies in education have shown that congruence between students’ learning styles and instructional strategies can improve academic performance and also motivate learning beyond the classroom. It has however been observed that information literacy instruction as reflected in user education programs in most universities in Africa do not take students’ learning styles into consideration. This paper highlights the need to adopt instructional strategies that can accommodate the different learning styles and build on the natural strengths of individual learner for effective information literacy instruction in African Universities.
