Abstract
Cohesion is an aspect of coherence, which refers to the formal connectedness within and among the sentences of a text. Given the previous studies of sermons from the semantic and stylistic perspectives, this works aim at filling the gap of a discourse analytical study through cohesive resources. The data for this study, “Sermon on the mountâ€, is a biblical text that is popularly referred to as the inaugural lecture of Jesus’ ministry. In spite of the heterogeneous nature of Jesus’ audience (which is typical of most classrooms and church settings) and the diverse basic Christian principles taught by Jesus (such as in political rallies or other public speeches), the success of the communicative event is remarkable (Math. 7:28), with respect to the wealth of cohesive resources employed. Thus, a cohesive analysis and information structures in the sermon text are expected to enrich the theory as well as the practice of text analysis, using a context-based grammatical approach (The SFG). Also, the cohesive analysis aims at making possible, the adoption of such coherent homiletic style to achieve communicative efficiency and dynamism at all levels of leadership. Finally, this work is expected to further cohesive studies in other register of English.
