Abstract
Abstract Competitiveness in the present information economy is not about working harder but working smarter than your competitors. The growing popularity of online databases, the success of online bookstores and the dwindling patronage of academic library by students lend credence to this assertion. Nigerian academic libraries operate in a dynamic and increasingly competitive environment and their position as the premium information provider is gradually being eroded by Information and Communication technologies and by more aggressive information providers. This paper posits that Nigerian academic libraries must be ready to change in response to changing user demands and technological innovations in order to survive the aggressive competition and remain relevant to the society. Therefore, the paper presents Total Quality Management (TQM), and marketing concept as management practices that Nigerian academic libraries must adopt to better position themselves for the quality service expected by the twenty-first century information user.
