Abstract
Sociolinguistics is a linguistic discipline that focuses on studying the correlations between Language use with respect to its social functions. This implies that, the use of language in a particular social setting is capable of defining the social variables of the social context. Therefore, this work aims at identifying the unique social variables of the Yoruba speech community in Nigeria through the use of language in selected popular Yoruba films. The study will use randomly selected Yoruba films that emphasize social transformations in terms of, moral, marital, religious and cultural issues. A sociolinguistic investigation of some important statements of the main characters of the films as subtitled in English will not only explicate the cultural and social values of the Yoruba speech community through the use of language by the characters, but also reveal the mutual cultural as well as linguistic dynamism of the Yoruba speech community. The Yoruba films selected for this study are, ‘Ohun Oko Somi da’, The Return of ‘Jenifa’ and Apoti Eri. Using the Systemic Functional Grammatical (SFG) approach, which stresses the need to match language functions with language forms for any successful linguistic analysis, this study will provide a sociolinguistic identity of the Yoruba speech community. Furthermore, it will help to discover the nature and trend of cultural transformations in the speech as revealed in the language use of the major characters of the select Yoruba films.
