Proverbs are unique linguistic that are usually based on the traditions of its users. This implies that they are cultural tools for transferring the traditions of a speech community in terms of their values beliefs and collective Knowledge from one generation to another. In the Yoruba speech community of Nigeria, Proverbs are multifunctional and flexible instruments of language use for several aspects of the Yoruba society in which they operate. As an ethnomethodological study, this paper will explicate how Yoruba proverbs are employed for social interactions, maintaining social relationships, performing routine activities, and reflecting their awareness of their environment. Consequently, a study of selected Yoruba proverbs, from a sociolinguistic approach, will familiarize readers with, as well as integrate them directly or indirectly into the values of good conduct, respect for elders, cordiality and cooperation for peaceful co-existence, to mention a few, in a Yoruba speech community. Finally, it is expected that the highly dynamic sociolinguistic approach to this study will encourage further researches in the exploitation of the inherent functions and themes of the proverbs of other cultures for the purpose of intimating people of one culture with, and possibly integrating them into another culture.
