Abstract
This research was carried out to expose the prevalence of religion conflict as one of the causes of crisis of governance in Nigeria. Religion is supposed to be a factor that should engender unity, for peaceful co-existence of people, which in turn, is essential for a nation. However, Nigerian experiences with religion have fallen short of this ideal. Religious intolerance has led to crisis of various magnitude, resulting in loss of lives, wanton destruction of properties and serving as a centrifugal force which makes it more difficult for governments (especially at the state and national levels) to have firm grips on governance. This study further noted that the efforts of the government towards ensuring religious harmony that could pave way for peaceful coexistence, has not yielded sufficient dividend, due to alleged complicity of some big shorts and insincerity of purpose on the part of the government itself. Hence the study recommended that sustainable development across the country and reduced involvement of government in religious matters will go a long way to minimize the prevalence of conflict and ensure good governance. The methodology adopted was basically descriptive and qualitative while data was collected through secondary sources.
