Abstract
ABSTRACT
Democracy and good governance are twin concepts upon which a nation should be built and nurtured. The Nigerian experiment has been chequered, with various perversions through the militarization of political structures and oppressive pseudo-military civilian dictatorships. The current political dispensation is also incontrovertibly tottering towards the same precipice, due to the pervasive dictatorial tendencies of the regime. Nigerian drama has from the colonial era continually pontificated on the inevitability of democratic good governance of the nation. The assertion seems to be that although the system is unwieldy, it must remain one united and indivisible entity. From Ogunde to Soyinka, Clark to Ola Rotimi and others of their ilk, the problem and prospects of democracy and good governance have been identified and analysed. They have also seriously criticized the leadership and the follower-ship as at when due. Their plays have also proffered solutions to the myriad of problems facing the political class. In conclusion this paper supports the position that drama has played an important role in ensuring democratic good governance in Nigeria.
