Abstract
The National Policy on Education (NPE) has spelt out clearly the philosophy and objectives which underline its involvement in Education. As one of the national educational goals, the acquisition of appropriate skills and competencies is regarded as a veritable tool for Nigeria technological development and economic empowerment. This informed the establishment of the students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) with the aim of giving students in tertiary institutions hands-on experience as opposed to the mainly theoretical framework they receive in the school. However, economic indices and report cards have indicated that there is a dearth of skilled upper and middle level manpower which has been the bane of our technological development in spite of the establishment of SIWES Programme. This paper takes a look at the italics and examines also the various strategies that can be applied to achieve greater efficiency of SIWES to meet the objectives of the National Policy of Education.
