Abstract

The paper examines youth restiveness in the Niger delta region of Nigeria and the challenges it posed to Nigeria democracy and the development of the region. Survey research design which was complemented with focus group discussion, oral interviews and content analyses were essentially used as tools for analysis. The result showed that dissatisfaction of the people of Niger Delta especially the youths on the level of attention given to the development of their region and the damages to their ecology by oil spilage are the major causes of the alarming youth restiveness. Surprisingly, the Niger delta region constitutes about 80% to the revenue of Nigeria. It is against this that the paper suggests the need for better involvement of the people not only in needs identification but also in execution of projects and non dependence on contractors and powerful people in the community for project execution.
