Abstract
In a globalized economy, the need for a sustainable education policy and practice cannot be overemphasized. This is made more urgent as the continent of Africa is considered a developing economy. Nigeria as the biggest economy, it is expected to play a major role in the continent. The need to reappraise our educational policy and practice cannot be overemphasized.
The research adopted a descriptive method making use of both primary and secondary sources. Focus group discussions and questionnaires were used to gauge the perception of students on the state of the educational system in Nigeria.
The authors investigated holistic education is a viable alternative to what is presently obtainable in Nigeria; a situation where graduates of higher institutions are deemed ‘unemployable’ can no longer be allowed to stand. The holistic approach involves not just the mental or intellectual learning, but the acquisition of skills through work-study and entrepreneurial skills. An adoption of the approach can take Nigeria and Africa out of the doldrums of economic stagnation.
