Abstract

In Africa, traditional knowledge systems and related resources have been in existence since time immemorial, controlled and protected by traditional legal systems. They are firmly rooted in the developing and least developed countries of Africa. Scholarly research has shown that traditional knowledge and related resources are wrongly appropriated by outsiders, exposed to the world, and in some cases protected by intellectual property rights at the detriment of the originators of these knowledge systems. Extensive research on traditional knowledge as intellectual property worthy of protection for socio-economic development in Africa, international trade and economic globalisation is necessary. It is important that research is conducted from an African perspective.
