Abstract
According to Democritus of Abderu, Greece, 5th-4th century B.C., “To do all the talking and not be willing to listen is a form of greed.†Listening is a receptive communication skill that people pay less attention to in today ’s world. If we are to place the four communications in order of acquisition and importance, listening should rank first. This is so because listening in actual fact it is the first skill to be acquired before the others i.e. speaking, writing, and reading. Before the child can acquire a language, which is done mainly through imitation, he must first listen. Through listening, child is able to hear and imitate the language of the environment in which he finds himself. This paper highlights the importance of listening in public speaking situation and the benefits it can bring to student especially in the classroom setting. Suggestions are also made to public speakers and teachers on how to develop active listening skills in their listeners or audience. This is so because good speakers breed good listeners. More importantly this paper highlights how listening can aid development.
