Abstract
This concept mil paper explores the influence of international broadcasting and globalization on the identity of Igbo Ethnic Nationality in South-East Nigeria. It locales the twin concepts of international broadcasting and globalization within the precincts of Development communication under which guisethe concepts had leeway and penetration into the sovereign states of emerging, underdeveloped nations but it specifically discusses these influences on indigenous la at individual and ethnic group levels that form part of I he geopolitical entity known as Nigeria. Reviewing the relevant theories along historical lines and postulations, this paper posits that the extent to which people's socio-cultural identity is influenced international broadcasting and globalization becomes clearer located within specific socio-cultural context of their ethnic/indigenous nationalities. It emphasizes assault on indigenous languages with a variety of foreign media, particularly of broadcast genre as a major weapon in this domination and erasure of a socio-cultural identity and calls for vigorous and refreshing efforts to reclaim the people’s indigenous language as an invaluable heritage, means of communication and purveyor of culture.
