Abstract
The Nigerian constitution states’ rights of women to get involved in politics. Women have legal rights, some of which are often violated. However, Nigerian women are accused of being their own worst enemies particularly in their quest for political participation. When they attempt to get involved they recoil when defeated, blaming everyone else but themselves. In 1999, only 2 percent of women were in governance, in 2003 and 2007 there were 4 and 6 percent respectively. What are the reasons behind this abysmal women representation in governance? Do the media give adequate coverage to women's efforts at political " participation or are the women cynical about political participation? The study content analyzed the media coverage of women political participation in The Punch and Guardian newspapers' weekday editions from January to May 2010. Results indicated that the newspapers gave little attention to women's political participation in their cover-page stories and editorials. However, the cartoons covered gender issues more than the other two attention-catching pages. Year 2010 not being an election one could be a factor. Given the observable women's efforts prior to 2011 elections, a significant difference may occur if the study is repeated for six months before this year's elections.
