Abstract
Objective: To investigate changes in amniotic fluid insulin in normal pregnancies compared with pathological pregnancies in Nigerian women.
Method: Insulin concentrations were measured using ELISA Kits (Diagnostic Automation Inc., USA) in amniotic fluid of n = 20 normal pregnant women, n = 17 women with intrauterine death and n = 9 women with anencephalous fetuses. For statistical analysis, Mann – Whitney U test, Student t test and Wilcoxon test were used.
Results: The amniotic fluid Insulin of pregnant women with live fetuses was 18.6 + 7.2 IU/L, with dead fetuses <0.5 IU/L, and in those with anencephaly fetuses, 21.3+ 8.1 IU/L. No significant difference was found between those with live and anencephalous fetuses.
Conclusion: In fetal death, there is total impairment of insulin metabolism.
