Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the symbiotic relationship between banking reforms and sound corporate governance. The paper identified some basic characteristics of good corporate governance and the need to create banks that are governed transparently in view of the attendant complexities associated with the financial reforms. The challenges of corporate governance in the Nigerian banking system were discussed and policy options needed to improve the level of corporate governance enunciated. The paper concludes that the success of financial reforms in Nigeria is dependent on sound corporate governance which will ensure that banks are liquid, safe and well managed.
