Generally, it is has been established even beyond academia that concepts cannot have a unequivocally accepted definition. Thus for the purpose of this work, it would be as a matter of duty to give acceptable descriptions to the various concepts to be examined: ethics, code of ethics and professionalism in order to put us on the right pedestal.
The term “ethics†is one that is most prominent in the realm of philosophy. It can simply be used to connote a set or system of moral principles or rules of behavior. It is the major ingredient that makes any professional group credible and worthwhile and in face enables any citizen conform to the societal standards and expectations. When ‘ethics’ is applied in the realm of any profession, they become the rules that govern or influence the behavior of members of the profession. With the proper understanding of the above, another variable in this realm seeking concrete explanation is “code of ethicsâ€. This can also be defined as rules made by a body having the power to do so, which give minimum acceptable norms expected of all who profess the specialized skill, breach of which can attract sanctions. Professionalism is gotten from the root word professional and this has been defined by the Association of Professional Bodies in Nigeria as “…someone who in providing a service for the good of the public or private, exercises a skill based on knowledge acquired by training and education leading to a demonstration of appreciable competence with utmost integrity and code of conduct of the relevant bodyâ€. Therefore, professionalism can be said to connote a commitment to excellence and high ethical standards in rendering of professional service.
