Abstract
University education is universally recognized not only as an epitome of individual achievement and self actualization but also as the peak of human capital and capacity building. Therefore, every society looks up to its universities for appropriate guiding lights in shaping the content and much of the direction of its socio-economic aspirations. This paper attempts to appraise the contributions of the Private Universities in Nigeria. The study reveals that inspite of the challenges confronting the Private Universities, they have contributed in no small measures towards the development of functional university education in Nigeria most especially in the areas of adherence to regular calendar, optimal utilization of resources, discipline and academic research. The paper concludes that with proper funding, stability in government’s socio-economic polices and the invigorating process of self-examination and self renewal, initiated by most of the Private Universities, they are bound to inject much needed vitality into the Nigerian University system.
