Abstract
How the outsiders and the staff see a business or an organization that is the image of an organisation – has always been the concern of most organizations. The concern for this image has been more in the banking business probably because of the distress that confronted the industry in the nineties. A major consequence of this distress was the erosion of confidence in virtually all the banks by banking public as many lost their hard earned money. This irksome development led banks to embark on a massive image polishing drive, to reassure the public of their “unshakable†ability to meet all their banking needs. The focus of this paper is therefore to examine the bank’s image making efforts, the public’s perception of the banks and how public relations can contribute to successful banking practice in the future. In doing this, the paper would attempt to espouse public relations from various experts’ points of view, overview the business of banking in Nigeria, look at the public’s perception of the banks, why PR is important in banking business, examine the problems of PR practice in Nigerian banks and try to recommend appropriate PR strategies for successful banking in future.
