Abstract
The use of a musical or dramatic work has resulted in interplay between mechanical rights and performing rights. In many jurisdictions mechanical/performing rights are collectively administered through Collective Management Organizations (CMO). This paper highlights collective administration of rights as the core of effective management of performers’ rights; examines collective administration of performance in Nigeria and Australia; compares both and identifies the challenges of Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) in effectively administering musical works and sound recordings; it concludes with recommendations that will enhance the effectiveness of COSON in years to come.
