Abstract

Due diligence is expected in both the private and public sectors to ensure duties are properly discharged according to mandates, while corporate governance is often associated with the private sector ( i.e. non-government sector). However, the relationship between the quality of corporate governance arrangements in public sector organizations and the quality of the services that they provide is important and crucial. The existence of good corporate governance reflects the characteristics of effective leadership and high standard of behaviour. It incorporates both strong internal characteristics and the ability to work effectively with the external environment. Thus this paper examines due diligence and corporate governance in the public sector of Nigeria, with particular focus on the Nigerian Copyright Commission. The following issues are highlighted in the paper: A brief description rather than definition of corporate governance, the evolution of corporate governance in Nigeria with particular focus on the public sector, the importance of satisfying the needs of stakeholders through due diligence and good corporate governance practice, some of the activities of the Nigerian Copyright Commission as an institution within the public sector and the positive effect of good corporate governance practice on stakeholders and the general public.
