The paper identified the instability and depression in the Nigerian financial system and subsequent directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria that banks should increase their capital base from N2billion to N25billion.Mergers and Acquisitions became a contemporary issue culminating the effect of recapitalization. The objective of this paper is to identify reasons and benefits of mergers and acquisitions. Using ANOVA statistical analysis to analyze the result of the field work, the paper concludes that merger and acquisition has impacted the financial sector in the following ways;(i)The consolidation has significant impact on global integration of bank operations, services and products;(ii).There is positive impact on technology and revolution in information technology (iii).A bank with good earning potentials will succeed by acquiring another bank with substantial assets.(iv).The banking sector as the bedrock of the nation will be enhanced.
