Abstract
This research is a literary study of the oral poetry of the Ngwa people – specifically the marriage songs texts. The study reveals the theme and motif, form and structure, style, affectivity and emotive, historical perspective, social perspective and musical features through a literary and critical evaluation of the songs, which are collected from a commissioned performance by ‘Obinwanne’ group – a group of traditional performers from Ngwa land in Ilishan. The study is divided into three main parts; the introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction gives the background information which is subtitled as follows; the classification of oral poetry, the nature of and patterns of performance in chants and songs, the Ngwa people of Igbo land, and the marriage culture of the Ngwa people. The analyses of the marriage songs texts constitute the body of the work and finally, the conclusion. The study reveals that marriage songs in Ngwa land are sung not only to celebrate the union but also to promote good morals of honesty, hard work, maturity, faithfulness, fidelity, amongst others
