Abstract
A surfeit of works has demonstrated, at least at the local level, the influence of ownership structure on the editorial policy and contents of the mass media. To advance the understanding of the casual connection between theses variables at the international level, this study, framed by McQuail’s accountability of mass media and McLeod and Chaffee’s Kite theories, sought to ascertain the effect of two international broadcast media system of ownership on their editorial content. The study focused on headlines which not only offer ‘windows’ into the substance of the full news but also serve as surrogate indicators of the editorial judgements of the news gatekeepers. Using a qualitative content analysis approach, the study discovered that the news broadcast of Press TV, a free to air non-commercial direct broadcasting by satellite television station owned by the Islamic Republic of Iran, is heavily modulated by its owners and practically serves as an instrument of its foreign policy. Al Jazeera, a station with vested global commercial interest covers the United States and Europe more than the other regions of the world even as its reportage appeared more detached and balanced.
