Abstract
This study investigated the socio-economic backgrounds of learners attending 10 rural secondary
schools plagued with violent student behaviours in the Vhembe district of South Africa. A
quantitative cross-sectional descriptive survey design was adopted. Self-administered
questionnaires were used to collect data from 334 randomly selected learners aged between 14
and 25 years. All the 10 secondary schools in rural Vhumbedzi educational circuit in the Vhembe
district of the Limpopo province were involved. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics.
Whilst 180(53.9%) of the participants were females, the majority (n=223; 66.8%) were in the 15-
20 age group. The results showed that most of the participants live in poor households without
access to portable water and modern source of energy for cooking and heating. Of the
participants, about 50(35%) males and 80(46%) females reported living with both biological
parents (mother and father) while attending school. Since poverty can be linked to violence, the
study recommends that the government poverty alleviation programme must target individual
homes of learners afflicted with poverty.
