Abstract
For too long the Criminal Justice System (CJS) agencies in Nigeria have wallowed in crude and obsolete means of crime prevention. Criminals seem to be always ahead of the agencies especially with their exposure to innovative means of crime perpetration through the aid of information and communication technology (ICT). Interestingly, the agencies are aware of these innovations brought by ICT that could enhance their carrying out their duties to the citizens and the state, but are handicapped by the myriads of archaic laws and procedures that regulation crime prevention and prosecution in Nigeria. The Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 (henceforth referred to as “ACJA 2015) has provided for the use of some ICT instruments and procedures in crime detection, investigation and prosecution. This paper appraises the ICT innovation available to the CJS; identify those provisions for ICT-driven police, prosecution and defence under the ACJA 2015 and proposes further necessary reforms in that regard to attain efficient and effective criminal justice in Nigeria. The discourse recognises pre-crime, crime perpetration and post-crime segments and how ICT could of help in each of those segments.
