Abstract
Nigeria has come to appreciate the focal position of education as
an instrument par excellence for achieving individual and societal
development. This is demonstrated in the provision of basic education
as evident in the formulation of a National Policy on Education
(FRN, 2004). All successive governments therefore, have been
emphasizing the provision of basic education since 1977 and with
the launch of the new initiative Universal Basic Education on 30th
September, 1999, despite the various systemic challenges facing the
education in the country.
The book Universal Basic Education - Implications of Facilities
Provision on Primary Education in Nigeria, has been carefully written
to reflect current theoretical and empirical information on the
scheme, particularly in the area of facilities provision at the first six
of the nine years of schooling under UBE. The book covers the most
essential topics and facts on the UBE. These topics were written to
bring to the fore current trends and development in the
implementation of the programme, so as to make them adaptable
to the present day realities and the yearnings of achieving education
for all.
The book contains eight chapters focusing on the various areas
of the UBE beginning from the general outlook of Nigerian basic
education to the challenges/demands of Facilities Provision under
the Scheme. In all, the book has been written for the immense benefits
and use of all stakeholders in the education industry, especially
students, teachers, school managers, researchers and the general
public.
