Abstract
This paper highlights the nutrient composition and the effects of four brands of feed in Ogun State on the broiler feed efficacy and live weight at 8 weeks. The results show that the crude protein (C.P.), metabolysable energy (M.E.), fats and fibre contents of commercial broiler rations in Ogun State are highly variable and no standard formula exists. The wide range of inclusions levels of these key nutrients- particularly C.P and M.E- is likely to be due in part to the prevailing high cost of feed ingredients and the need to lower production costs through least cost formulation of feed. The effect of dietary C.P and M.E on the intake of the experimental diet was similar (r=0.74). However the feed and energy efficiencies of the diets were higher in diets M.E (Table one). As compared with C.P, M.E had a higher effect on feed efficiency (r=-0.99 versus -0.41) and the 8th week live weight of broilers (r=0.93 versus 0.54). Table two. The highest mean live weight at 8 weeks was recorded in the T-1 corhort (2,200 grammes) and the lowest amongst the cohort maintained on T-2 (1,400 grammes).
