Abstract
Fertility has demographic and health implication on economies. Its direct effect on the health of women and children emphasize its importance. However, fertility levels differ across countries and pertinent behaviours and factors explain this. This paper reviews some economic theories of fertility, highlighting the various factors that influence fertility decisions. While some theories seem to be generally applicable, others were only consistent with Western countries. The peculiarities of developing countries, particularly African societies justify the need for modifications if some theories are to be applied to health policy.
