Abstract
The study examines the effect of fertility on the health of mothers in sub- Saharan Africa (SSA). Literatures on the health effects of fertility have mostly focused on the final health outcome - maternal mortality, neglecting the quality of life during their remaining life span. Using data from 1997 to 2014 for 15 countries among the twenty countries with the highest total fertility rate in the world, the fixed effect estimator is employed. Total fertility rate is found to significantly worsen health status by reducing the life expectancy rate of women and increasing the lifetime risk of maternal death.
