Abstract
This study examines the effect of health care expenditure on child mortality in West Africa. The estimation is done with the random effect estimator where health expenditure is assumed to be exogenous as well as when its potential endogeneity is accounted for using some instruments. Results show that health care expenditure has no significant effect on both infant mortality and under-five mortality. In the case of under-five mortality, there is only an exception when private health expenditure is found to have a positive effect when health expenditure is assumed to be exogenous. Access to improved drinking water source is significant.
