Abstract
There is still the challenge of low female labour participation especially among mothers despite the need for women empowerment and increased participation in economic growth activities in sub-Saharan Africa. The author examined the determinants of maternal labour participation. The two-stage estimation method was employed to control for endogeneity bias. Education increased labour participation of mothers in both formal and informal sectors with a stronger effect in the urban formal sector. However, post-secondary education deterred informal sector participation. High fertility increased formal sector participation but reduced informal sector participation. An increase in the number of child death reduced maternal labour participation in the formal sector but increased informal sector participation. Number of hours of work per day, which is synonymous with higher earnings is a significant incentive for increasing maternal labour participation in both sectors.
