NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND THE RISK OF HYPERTENSION AMONG MARKET WOMEN IN OFFA, KWARA STATE

Abstract
Market place is an occupational environment that predisposes individuals to the risk of hypertension due to enhanced access to food. This study assessed the nutritional status and the risk of hypertension among market women in Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria. A total of 353 market women were randomly selected for this study. Data collected using a pre-tested, structured questionnaire employing the World Health Organization Stepwise approach to surveillance-instrument to obtain information on socio-demographic characteristics. Body Mass Index (BMI), Blood Pressure (BP), Body fat (BF)and lipid profile were measured standard procedures and data obtained analyzed using descriptive statistics, while Pearson correlation/chi-square were used to establish relationships between variables. Majority of the respondents (70.8%) were between 31-60 years, while 25.1% were 60 years. The BMI of respondents revealed that 25.2%, 29.2%, and 41.6% were normal, overweight and obese. 21.0%, 19.3%, and 54.1% had normal, high and very high body fat respectively. In contrast, 8.8% and 8.3% had stage I and stage II hypertension respectively. Biochemical lipid profile measured in mmol/L of the respondents showed that 28.0% had high total cholesterol and 22.0% high LDL levels. Dietary nutrient intake revealed that respondents consumed more than the RDA for Energy, Protein, Carbohydrate and Fat.
