Abstract
The exegesis of Hosea 4:1-3 reveals the condition of the earth as presented by the use of two words-"mourn" and "languish" which portray a vast sorrow that touches all elements of creation. Moreover, the languishing of the "beasts of the field", the taking away of "birds of the sky" and -the "fish of the sea" also suggests the faltering of all creation. Furthermore, that, there is no -'emeth (reliability) no -chesed (mutual obligation or kindness) as mentioned in verse 1, simply means there is no Knowledge of God which, according to Hosea, includes obedience. The word translated as stealing in Hosea 4:2 could equally mean 'robbery, theft as well as 'kidnapping. The use of pa 'breaking of all bounds' in verse 2 thus implies that there was no restraint on sin and wickedness in ancient Israel. In a nutshell, the exegesis of Hosea 4:1-3 reveals the level of chaos in ancient Israelite society exhibited in their unethical attitudes (Hos. 4:2).
