Abstract
Eighty three patients with clinical and operative
findings of intussusception were reviewed in the
Lagos State University Teaching Hospital from
January 2007 to June 2011.We found that patients
with this disorder still present late in spite of the free
medical care policy for the paediatric age group in
Lagos State. The most frequent presenting symptom
was rectal bleeding. The most frequent sign was red
currant jelly stool on digital rectal examination. All
patients had surgical intervention after adequate fluid
replacement. There were no losses from patients that
presented with trans-anal prolapsing intussusception.
This is partially a primary healthcare problem. We
suggest more public enlightenment on this condition.
To the primary healthcare providers, any child
between the ages of 3 months to 9 months with the
above mentioned symptom and sign should be
considered as having intussusception until proven
otherwise.
Keywords: Childhood intussusception, late
presentation.
