Abstract
Gender Inequality is has not been alien to the church. Many Adventist women especially in traditional Adventist churches are traumatized, as some Adventist men in recent tSimes, have used the Silence Motif of I Corinthians 14:34, 1 Timothy 2:12-14 and ultimately, the (Silence motif of Genesis 2:18, to subjugate the women in the church. Of a truth the sphere remains predominantly a man's world. These women are only part of the male's story. As placed, they remain invisible. On querying such segregation, the Bible has been used to protect what they tagged "status quo." They engage in interpretation of texts to define all differences between man and woman. A popular interpretation claims that the creation of the woman second, out of Adam, could be treated as evidence that she was inferior to man, subordinate and even evil (Gen. 2:23). The above understanding probably stems also from an ancient Jewish Prayer in which men thank God that they are not women. Interestingly, our text of Genesis 2:18, has a Jewish connotation, such that has at least two traditions about the nature of woman. The first built on the premise of original state of humanity before fall, holding that there was equality. The second tradition attempts to explain the actual subordinate condition of a woman in society after the fall. Consequent on these assumptions, one may wish to know if there is correlation between equality and mutuality, on one hand and subordination and submission on the other. Furthermore, what does Genesis 2:18 imply? Here lies the thrust of this paper. Commensurately, the Grammatical Exegesis that pays specific and strict attention to the context of the passage will be implored as exegetical platform for the study, as this is very important in determining the interpretation of the select text.
