Abstract
The elasticity in the meaning deduction of human language by the decoders of the message is highly dependent on the context, ambivalence and mode of expression. The neglect and inability for users to actively employ appropriated language mode in Child upbringing degenerates to misunderstanding and abuse which negates the duty of the fathers in child upbringing as recorded in Ephesian 6:4. This indeed is a source of problem in the society as it leads to physical and emotional neglect and abuse. This paper therefore investigates the role of the father in the text under study, unveiling the accurate meaning of the word training in context using the historical grammatical methods. Findings showed that the role of a father is to train his child. The word training means to encourage, educate, disciple, direct, and correct in love. These virtues are inhibited by nonchalancy, ignorance, gullibility and breakdown of extended family. The paper however recommends among others that fathers should return to their biblical role of training in their various homes.
