Abstract
The incessant bridge of communication which often results from interruption due to overlaps in spontaneous interaction of interlocutors has become a major source of concern to experts as it negatively impacts communication ?ow. Using the 2010 session of the Nigerian National Assembly as a case study and Gail Je?erson yardstick for the categorization of overlaps as theoretical framework, the paper adopts a qualitative analytical approach with the view to review the perspectives of interlocutors in the trends of an ongoing talks. Findings espoused a number of social, professional and personality variables which hinges on the three basic types of overlap onsets; transitional, recognitional and progressional. The study commemorates the view of Knight G. which holds that most people have gotten their educational priorities backward and therefore recommends that teachers should help their students realize that and seek to instill faith, right principles and values into the students in order to a?ect their perceptions and attitudes and also, minimize the e?ect of interruption due to overlaps on communication ?ow.
