Abstract
Can the mass media defend democracy in Nigeria? In their present state, do the Nigerian mass media have what is needed to defend democracy? What does it mean to defend democracy? What kind of environment and resources are needed to defend democracy? In the face of several anti-democracy forces, what is the likelihood that the Nigerian mass media can successfully defend democracy? How can the mass media be strengthened to defend democracy? These questions are the focus of this paper. Beginning on a rather pessimistic outlook, the authors raise doubts on the ability of the Nigerian mass media, with their several institutional and social problems to defend Nigeria's fledgling democracy. They identify anti-democratic factors that disrupt democracy and the mass media; and suggest ways of bolstering the Nigerian mass media to effectively combat anti-democracy forces and successfully defend democracy.
