Abstract
The study was undertaken to determine the meat preference and meat consumption pattern of offcampus
students of Babcock University and how they meet their daily animal protein requirement. This
might be of interest to the University authority and their parents, who are concerned on the wellbeing
of these students. Collection of data was through a well structured questionnaire in line with the objectives
of the study. A total of 150 questionnaires were administered to students and the results were
subjected to descriptive statistics using frequency count and percentages. Students indicated preference
for beef, goat meat, fish, and poultry with percentages in decreasing order for preference of:
33.3%, 20%, 16.7%, and 16.7%, respectively. Majority 56% students eat meat to subsidize for animal
protein everyday while minority 13% students claimed to be vegetarians. Forty three 43% percent
respondents preferred meat cooked in stew, 26% respondents preferred roasted meat balls while minority
16% responding students preferred barbeque meat products. Majority of the students indicated
that if their financial situation improves 50% respondents would increase their meat consumption to
five times daily while 30% will increase to three times per day.
