The key elements in both the internal and external environment such as physical, technological, social, political, and economic to a great extent affect the employee’s productivity level either positively or negatively. The study among other things examined the importance of each of these elements to the performance of the employee. It also identified how the work environment especially the internal work environment can be improved upon so as to guarantee maximum productivity. The research which was descriptive in nature revealed that a positive work environment will help increase employee’s productivity level and that adequate effort should be made by Human Resource Management (HRM) to provide suitable motivational techniques such as incentives, praise, engendering loyalty, disciplinary guidelines, quality of work life and adequate infrastructure. HRM from time to time should review its policies on employer/employee right, work and family relation, education training/retraining, changing demography in order to achieve sustainable high level of employee’s performance. The study concludes that for organizations to succeed, they must adapt their organizational behaviour to the realities of the current work environment where success is based on innovation, creativity and flexibility.
