Abstract
The political, economic and social conditions of the African Continent have had definite consequences for the dignity and development of the Africans on the continent. While the United Nations (UN) efforts on the continent have been guided by its Charter commitment to the pursuit of the social progress of all peoples, these efforts have not been without challenge. The central objective of this paper is to explore the humanitarian dimensions of the African crises and evaluate the efforts o the United Nations in this regard with a view to proffering an alternative paradigm for UN activities in Africa. Based on an exploration of the scholarly and practitioner literature, this paper argues that although constrained by various theoretical and practical factors, the United Nations can in partnership with other agents meet her Charter obligations, and exceed current efforts towards meeting the humanitarian challenges in Africa.
